Q) What inspired you to write this story?

Warrior Rogue is a direct sequel to Warrior Prince. It’s a continuation of what happens to one of the characters at the end of the first story.

The idea for the Drift Lords Series came from a ride at Disney’s Epcot theme park. In the Norway pavilion is a ride called Maelstrom. You board a boat that glides into a dark tunnel and rises up a steep incline. At the top are three trolls who cast a spell on you to disappear. Suddenly, your boat is whisked backward through time into Norwegian history. I loved the idea of evil trolls, magic, and Norse mythology. This is where the series took root.

As the first story starts, rifts have opened on Earth between dimensions, allowing invaders called Trolleks to threaten humanity. The Drift Lords are summoned to send them back where they belong. But they cannot defeat the enemy themselves. These warriors need the help of a special group of Earth women with special powers. The Trolleks use theme parks and tourist attractions around the world for their nefarious purpose. There’s one in Warrior Rogue based on Tiger Balm Gardens in Hong Kong. Whenever possible, I model my scenes after places I’ve visited.

The action in Warrior Rogue starts off in Tokyo and then moves to Hong Kong, Manhattan, and Palm Beach. I’ve been to all of those places and used my travel diaries to help me set the scene. The hero—Paz Hadar—is stranded in a strange land, unable to contact his team, and lacking his equipment and weapons. Jennifer Dyhr, an American woman he meets in Tokyo, offers him a ride to the States in her business jet, but along the way they are assaulted mid-air. Jen and Paz get into one scrape after another, all the while trying desperately to get home.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I would say this book took me four to six months. It was long at 444 manuscript pages. The initial plotting would have taken another month or two, and self-edits plus proofreading an additional few months. Plus I had certain items to research. I had to make sure the places I’d visited were still there. Then I needed a model for the enemy stronghold in my story. I chose Himeji Castle in Japan, using an online video to give me a feel for the place. Sea monsters, giant jellyfish, Chinese junks, electromagnetic weapons, energy properties of diamonds, and the Fountain of Youth were subjects I studied for this story.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I like the plotting process although it can give me a headache until all the threads come together, but that’s a sublime moment. So is being in the zone, when I’m in the second half of the book and the story flows on its own. Once the story is in my head, the subconscious takes over and that’s when story magic occurs.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
I hate beginnings. Facing page one is the hardest part. Putting characters on stage for the first time before I really know them is always difficult.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I’d be the Queen of England. I could live with having a cook, footman, personal maid, and secretary and living in a palace, but for one day only. Then I’d want to go back to a simpler life, although I wouldn’t mind taking the cook home with me.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
We might have some old Hoisin sauce in there. I haven’t cooked Chinese in a while.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Coming next is another Bad Hair Day mystery, Hanging By A Hair. Besides writing paranormal/scifi/fantasy romance, I also write humorous cozy mysteries. Shear Murder is #10 and the latest title in my Bad Hair Day series. These stories feature South Florida hairstylist Marla Shore. And then I expect my 20th book to be Warrior Lord, #3 in the Drift Lords Series.
